The Deacon's Challenge
This year's Deacon's Challenge golf match took place at the Roxburghe on Saturday 26th May.
The captain of the Former Deacon's, Jerry Brett, picked a team with a fair sprinkling of experience shored up with youthful exuberance. The Deacon however picked a team of raw talent dressed in lilac sweaters.
The course was in grand order and gave a stern test to those involved. Sadly a hail shower followed by rain with 3 holes to go necessitated some nifty brolly work but didn't dampen spirits.
However there has to be a winner and this year the Deacon's team came out on top winning the match 3 games to 1. A 4 nil whitewash looked a distinct possibility at one stage but for some inspired golf from Roly Brett and Charles Stewart in the final 4 ball.
For the record the results are as follows (Deacons team first):
Richard Bell & Alan Mathieson beat Jerry Brett and Sean Crannigan 3&2
Paul Sharp & Michael Lightowlers beat J Alistair Buchan & Tony Taylor 4&3
Stewart Henry & Jim Stark beat David Ogilvie & Keith Hendrie 2&1
Paul Creamer & Alistair Young lost to Roly Brett & Charles Stewart 2&1
After the presentation of the trophy by Jerry Brett to the victorious Deacon and his team a well earned bowl of soup and sandwiched were enjoyed followed by tales of derring do and missed putts.
