Scottish Borders Manufacturers' Corporation
Corporation Golf Day
This year's golf outing was held at the Woll Golf Club in Ashkirk on Friday 24th August.
The weather was perfect with warm sunshine and the course was in the best of order.
After being suitably fortified with bacon rolls and liquid refreshment the 42 participants took to the golf course in a teams of 3 and 4 balls with varying degrees of optimism.
The Deacon struck the first blow, a lusty swipe with a 5 wood to what his playing partners described as "position A". The 6 subsequent hits however before the ball finally disappeared into the hole were not greeted with the same description. But the game was on and there was no turning back.
By the time everyone had returned unsullied and untarnished to the haven of the clubhouse there would be many more tales to tell. Some of extravigant good fortune, many of extravigant bad fortune, but mainly of good companionship and enjoyment.
The golf club catering team then went into overdrive to get us all fed and watered prior to the important part of the day; the prizes.
As befits true Borders hospitality a couple of the main prizes this year were allowed to go down south to that other place and it was left to Mandy Short, the best local golfer on the day to save our blushes. The complete list of prize winners were;
1st: M Sean Crannigan 39 points (bih)
2nd: Peter Jones 39 points
3rd: Mandy Short 38 points (bih)
4th: David Oxley 38 points
Ladies prize: Mandy Short
Nearest the Pin: Billy Ritchie
Longest Drive: Jerry Brett
The staff of the Woll Golf Club deserve a vote of thanks for looking after us so well and also to the Boxmaster who sorted any and all problems on the day.
