Scottish Borders Manufacturers' Corporation
Cricket, SBMC v Yorkshire Manufacturers, June 2008
After last year's glorious victory away in Ilkley, the Scottish contingent of the SBMC were perhaps over confident going into this match which was held at St Boswells cricket club.
Yorkshire bought up a strong team filled with experienced players bent on revenging last years comprehensive defeat.
With the Deacon, having undergone surgery, unable to play Former Deacon Jerry Brett assumed the mantle of captain. At least two respected cricket afficionados believed that our defeat was down to the free transfer of Keith Johnston and Andy Purves to the Yorkshire team.
We lost the toss and they elected to bat on a slow wicket, we bowled reasonably well and they were all out for 142, a total which we had a reasonable prospect of reaching given the potential of our batting line up.
Our confidence evaporated very early in the match when the score stood at 1 for 4!!! Even the Deacon standing as Umpire could do nothing to prevent this catastrophic batting collapse. However, every cloud has a silver lining and the SBMC players transferred by Jerry particularly revelled in his dismissal 1st ball! In Jerry's defence the bowling was very strong on a drying pitch with a easterly breeze aiding the Yorkshire swing bowlers.
A number of determined tands by our middle and less experienced batsman did enable us to reach 100, sadly only the weather could have denied Yorkshire victory.
The trophy was presented to the victorious captain and we all retired to the bar.
A good number of had an enjoyable night out in Melrose with the Yorkshiremen and we are looking forward to the return match in 2010.
I would like to record my appreciation of Jerry Brett's efforts in organising the team and this very enjoyable and worthwhile event.
The pictures are from the 2007 event in Ilkley, I suspect that the pint(s) before the match in Ilkley was the difference between our two performances!
