Scottish Borders Manufacturers' Corporation
Michaelmas Dinner - 31st October 2008
Our annual dinner was once again held at the Dryburgh Abbey Hotel, where 122 members and guests enjoyed a fine dinner and excellent speeches.
The toast to the “The Scottish Borders & its Industry” was given by John Swinney, MSP; Cabinet Secretary for Finance. His witty and informative toast was appreciated by all and he seemed to enjoy the company of Nigel Brown and our Boxmaster.
I gave the reply and appreciated the good order that was afforded to me.
Alwyn Johnstone of Lochcarron informed that in the "olden days" the Deacon's speech was printed verbatim in all local papers, updating this practice to the 21st century, I have included a copy of this speech in the succeeding article.
One of the Borders' best kent faces and voices, Jim Telfer MBE ex-Scotland and British Lions player and coach gave an excellent informative, thoughtful and heartfelt toast to “Border Life”, drawing upon his own life and childhood in the Borders and championing youth opportunity.
The reply by Nigel Brown, vet, golfer, raconteur, was excellent and very amusing. We all enjoyed his poem "the Tweed" but I doubt you'll find it in any poetry book!
Deacon-elect Sarah Mathieson (Vantage Events) toasted our guests in a manner and style which whets our appetite for her speech next year.
Thanks to my Boxmaster for organising and keeping order on the night.
